Over the years we’ve collected Tips for Doing Video Interviews in Omaha. In this day and age, being in front of the camera is quite common. Maybe the filmed interview is for your job, your own business, your passion project, or for the board you sit on. Whatever the reason for being interviewed on camera, don’t sweat it; we edit.
Interviewing on camera doesn’t have to be nerve-wracking. Here are a few tips to help put your mind at ease and put your best thoughts forward:
- Wear something the mic can be attached to. Most of the time, you will be lavaliered (that’s the tiny microphone that attaches to your collar or lapel). Having a place to clip it is handy, like a suit jacket or shirt collar. It can be clipped to a t-shirt or dress, but FYI the wires have to be snaked underneath your shirt or dress, so a shirt is simply easier.
- Practice what you are going to say. Are we the only ones, when we were kids, practiced our Academy Award acceptance speeches in front of the bathroom mirror? I doubt it! So feel free to practice what you are going to say. Talk out loud to yourself or practice in front of the mirror and see what is natural. Are you more of a off-the-cuff type who doesn’t need or like to practice ahead of time? No worries, we are all about going with the flow.
- Restate the question in your answer. When being interviewed, if a person is asking you the question, we don’t want their off-camera disembodied voice coming in the video, so say the question again as part of your statement. Example: “What do you like best about your organization?” Answer: “What excites me about my organization….”. Ideal to speak in complete sentences, I mean…it is ideal to speak in complete sentences.
- Be confident, you’ve got this. Who better to talk about your thing than you? In this day and age, personality counts. People want to connect with a person, which is why video is so successful for the project. Let your personality come through. You can be both professional and warm or dry, you do you. If you aren’t peppy, you don’t have to be; if you are peppy, let that shine through. Sit up straight and away you go!
- Know where to look. Keeping the correct eye line is important for video and is easy to accomplish. We will say, “Look at this camera.” Or “Look at the person off camera,” who is doing the interview. It’s that easy. (Here’s a bonus pro-tip for Zoom meeting or interview: look at your computer camera when you talk, not the screen. It will come across as being personal, and you will be making eye contact with the person that you are speaking to on the other end of the Zoom call, instead of seemingly looking at your Facebook feed while talking to them.) 😊
- Speak clearly at a normal speed. No worries if you blimp up, just pause and start again. Restating your thought before you blimp is a way to jump back on your train of thought.
- If using a teleprompter, warm up your voice and facial expressions. Teleprompter time is a time to read through what you are going to say ahead of time, so you kind of know what is coming next on some level. Present your info with a tone of voice that fits your project.
- Voice overs. Maybe you are reading a voice over, definitely practice a few times. We can wait. Say words clearly, and if you blub one, just backtrack and read that part over again. Because, wait for it…We edit, so you can try again!
- Let your light shine. Your passions, your experience, your experience, your organization, your business is in the spotlight, so it’s your time to shine on. Yay, it is nice to know that some things in life can be enjoyable. So with these Tips for Doing Video Interviews in Omaha..we will do what we do, so that you can be brilliant with what you do!
Happy Filming!
